AED 200 Reflections

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
My expectations were to learn more about art history and famous artists and to open my mind to different kinds of art. Yes I believe they were met. I did learn a lot about ancient art.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
Art, to me, cannot be defined. Art is everywhere. Music, painting, architecture, sculpting, knitting, fashion and advertisements. You honestly can't go anywhere without seeing or using some sort of art piece.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
My favorite artist was and always will be Vincent van Gogh. I just love his use of brushstrokes and colors. I just think his style is so unique and different and that is how I am.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
I have taken online courses before and have always liked them. This course was a lot of work each week, sometimes I think it was unnecessary to watch all those videos.

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
I thought these were the best examples of self portraits for me to learn from. I had to look at different museums to find them because not all the museums had a lot to choose from.
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
I chose digital because I do my best work through a computer. I work with computers a lot so I felt that using a computer program to do my self portrait makes the piece have a hidden meaning. 
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?
The only challenge was figuring out what I wanted to do for it. I, honestly, am not the best drawer so I had to find a way to work around that. 
4. How does this piece represent you?
I chose to just do a replica of my picture because what best describes you than yourself! 
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
I used texture through the lines in the background, perspective by the shadows in the background, and value from the black scale of the shading. 
6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
It was okay. I felt a bit rushed because of all the other work we had to do this week.
7. What do you think of your final artwork?
I liked my self portrait. I thought it was a good replica of me and shows my softer side. 

Article Reflection

1. Which projects did you review?
I reviewed at least 10 projects before I actually picked one. I finally selected Demi Flynn's "Nature's Finest".

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?

I selected this exhibit because the piece's intrigued me. Also, because the theme of this project was kind of similar to my own project. 

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?

The hardest part for me was the length of the article. It was also hard trying to have an objective look and not a total personal outlook on the exhibit. I tried to make my article interesting without going to far into detail about the pieces. I figured if you tell everyone about the whole exhibit, why would they need/want to go see it for themselves?

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?

Critiquing peers is okay. I try to be as honest as possible without being harsh. That can be very hard sometimes!

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?

Yes I would. 

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?

I would rate my article an 9 out of 10.  I didn't give it a full 10 because there is always room for improvement even if you try your hardest!

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?

I did enjoy this even though it was tough. I don't really understand the point of writing about the writing we just did, but you have to do what you have to do!

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance (Giorgio Vasari)

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark- This film is about the conversation, spotlighting Clement Greenberg’s reflections on his career and its place in the wider arenas of art theory, art journalism, and the philosophy of aesthetics. Greenberg shares a number of insights on the relationship between art and history, the nature of value judgments in criticism, and what he calls America’s post-WWII “culture boom.”

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance- Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists has been the basis of art criticism since the 16th century. The discussion between Master Vasari and his apprentice reveals the innovations of Giotto, Ghiberti, Donatello, Uccello, Masaccio, della Francesca, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raffaello, and Michelangelo. Masterpieces illustrate the Roman influence on Renaissance art and reinforce the concepts of perspective, balance, chiaroscuro, composition, and realism.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

I do not believe these videos relate to my project as they were about completely different themes and topics than my project. While these videos were interesting, they really have nothing to do with my theme for the art criticism project which was "trees".

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?

Both of these videos were interesting. The first film with Greenberg definitely added depth to my understanding of art criticism. It taught me how to take the right approach to critiquing work. The second video, however, did not add depth to my understanding. I did learn a lot of information about the Italian Renaissance, like it was the earliest manifestation of the general European Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement that began in Italy during the 14th century and lasted until the 16th century, marking the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe.

Project 4 Reflection

This first thing I did to start my exhibit was learn what it meant to be an art curator. So to learn this I watched Art Curator, Interview: Josh Yiu Assistant Curator of Chinese Art, Interview Wayne Baerwaldt curator Montreal Biennale, Felicity Fenner, curator at the Venice biennale and Peter Alter, Curator. After finishing these videos, it was time for me to pick a theme. This was harder than I expected. Obviously there are plenty of themes you could do, but most of them have been done over and over again. I wanted to pick a specific theme so it wouldn't be too broad. I figured nature would be a popular theme so I took that and chose something more specific to that theme. I came up with trees. Once I chose this theme it was time to find some pieces to go along with it. At first I had a really hard time. Then I realized I was going about searching for them the wrong way. So I picked an artist that I liked and limited my search to the artist name and tree. After doing this, I came up with more than enough options. The hard part became choosing the best options! Once I had all my pictures in place it was time to design the slides to correlate with the paintings. I had to think about the background, fonts and colors. I did not want anything that would take away from the beauty of the trees. This project was pretty interesting because you learn how much goes into these exhibits at museums and galleries. Its not just putting up art, its creating an atmosphere and an experience.

Module 13 and 14 videos

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art

1. discuss the key concepts you learned.
Some concepts I learned was what lowbrow means. It is art that no one knows how to characterize. Artist don't like using this term. I also learned that this type of style is made for the people and made to relate to the people. It uses car culture, pop culture and even historic references.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
It relates to the project for me in one way. It shows me that an exhibit does not need to be the normal paintings or sculptures, it can be provocative and they can be pretty much anything you want.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
This film was interesting. I have never heard of "Lowbrow" art until watching this. I don't really think it added much depth to my project.

Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach

1. discuss the key concepts you learned.
Some key concepts I learned was the intellectual and aesthetic issues associated with the display of art, using rooms in the Tate Modern as an example. Over viewing the exhibition style Alfred Barr established during his transformation of Museum of Modern Art in the 1930s, the video shows how Tate curators developed a new method utilizing theme-based museum sections.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
Yes this relates to the project because it shows how important the background and surroundings of your exhibit are. You do not want to pick anything that will overshadow the artwork and you want to make sure it coincides with the work.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
I thought this film was very informative. It really helped me think about how I will display my exhibit on the PowerPoint. That is pretty much the only thing I learned from this video.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology

1. Discuss the key concepts you learned.
This video talks about the remains of more than 10,000 Native Americans unearthed at archaeological sites across the U.S. are in the possession of museums such as the Smithsonian. This video discusses the tensions between scientists, historians, and museum curators and Native American groups, as the bones take on a central role in a war of alternate perspectives.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I do not think this video relates to my exhibition project. This video was pretty much all about how the Native Americans interpreted art throughout history, which has nothing to do with my project. The smallest connection I made was how art can keep a history of someone or something living forever.


3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
While I thought this film was very informative on the Native Americans history in art, I do not think it added any depth to the art concepts that we have learned.

An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan

1. discuss the key concepts you learned.
Some key concepts I learned is that a museum is never done and they do not just fill gaps they cannot represent a style, artist, or movement unless they can get an outstanding example. Mr. de Montebello has acquired more than 84,000 works of art and is the longest tenured director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I think this video definitely relates to my exhibition project. They discuss how curators find the best representative piece of the style or movement they are showing. It shows how much work goes into every detail of the museum, from frames to wall colors to lighting and even the other pieces surrounding each other.


3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
This film was very interesting and informative. It really helped me understand how important the surroundings of the art work is. Each piece has to work together and you should never settle for a piece that "kind of" fits the theme or movement you are exhibiting. You want to have the best.

Module 12 Videos

Andy Warhol: Images of an Image
The Art of Henry Moore

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
Andy Warhol video: I've always been interested in Andy Warhol because of his Campbell Soup painting. He is very different and I want to learn more about him.
Henry Moore video: I am not really sure why I chose this video. I guess I just wanted to learn more about him.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Andy Warhol video- the video talks about the Pop Art movement and life of Andy Warhol. He began by photographing his friends and then later filmed them. Then he added paint to his silk screening. Also, the many different faces of Liz Taylor was interesting to me how they all seemed to be different, but they all have her face to preserve the identity of Liz.

 Henry Moore video- this video talked about the works of Henry Moore. It showed the sculptures of wounded warriors that he had done from a pebble he had found. He said "One must try to find a synthesis, to come to terms with opposite qualities".

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos really didn't relate to the text besides the fact that they discussed artwork from the time period post WWII and how the artists were changed by it.

 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I learned more about these two artists and they were very helpful in providing examples of their artwork. The videos put more images in my mind regarding the text. I am more of a visual learner so watching the videos usually helps what I read in the text sink in.
