AED 200 Reflections

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
My expectations were to learn more about art history and famous artists and to open my mind to different kinds of art. Yes I believe they were met. I did learn a lot about ancient art.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
Art, to me, cannot be defined. Art is everywhere. Music, painting, architecture, sculpting, knitting, fashion and advertisements. You honestly can't go anywhere without seeing or using some sort of art piece.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
My favorite artist was and always will be Vincent van Gogh. I just love his use of brushstrokes and colors. I just think his style is so unique and different and that is how I am.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
I have taken online courses before and have always liked them. This course was a lot of work each week, sometimes I think it was unnecessary to watch all those videos.

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
I thought these were the best examples of self portraits for me to learn from. I had to look at different museums to find them because not all the museums had a lot to choose from.
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
I chose digital because I do my best work through a computer. I work with computers a lot so I felt that using a computer program to do my self portrait makes the piece have a hidden meaning.
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?
The only challenge was figuring out what I wanted to do for it. I, honestly, am not the best drawer so I had to find a way to work around that.
4. How does this piece represent you?
I chose to just do a replica of my picture because what best describes you than yourself!
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
I used texture through the lines in the background, perspective by the shadows in the background, and value from the black scale of the shading.
6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
It was okay. I felt a bit rushed because of all the other work we had to do this week.
7. What do you think of your final artwork?
I liked my self portrait. I thought it was a good replica of me and shows my softer side.

Article Reflection

1. Which projects did you review?
I reviewed at least 10 projects before I actually picked one. I finally selected Demi Flynn's "Nature's Finest".

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?

I selected this exhibit because the piece's intrigued me. Also, because the theme of this project was kind of similar to my own project.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?

The hardest part for me was the length of the article. It was also hard trying to have an objective look and not a total personal outlook on the exhibit. I tried to make my article interesting without going to far into detail about the pieces. I figured if you tell everyone about the whole exhibit, why would they need/want to go see it for themselves?

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?

Critiquing peers is okay. I try to be as honest as possible without being harsh. That can be very hard sometimes!

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?

Yes I would.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?

I would rate my article an 9 out of 10.  I didn't give it a full 10 because there is always room for improvement even if you try your hardest!

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?

I did enjoy this even though it was tough. I don't really understand the point of writing about the writing we just did, but you have to do what you have to do!

Module 15 Videos

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance (Giorgio Vasari)

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark- This film is about the conversation, spotlighting Clement Greenberg’s reflections on his career and its place in the wider arenas of art theory, art journalism, and the philosophy of aesthetics. Greenberg shares a number of insights on the relationship between art and history, the nature of value judgments in criticism, and what he calls America’s post-WWII “culture boom.”

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance- Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists has been the basis of art criticism since the 16th century. The discussion between Master Vasari and his apprentice reveals the innovations of Giotto, Ghiberti, Donatello, Uccello, Masaccio, della Francesca, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raffaello, and Michelangelo. Masterpieces illustrate the Roman influence on Renaissance art and reinforce the concepts of perspective, balance, chiaroscuro, composition, and realism.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

I do not believe these videos relate to my project as they were about completely different themes and topics than my project. While these videos were interesting, they really have nothing to do with my theme for the art criticism project which was "trees".

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?

Both of these videos were interesting. The first film with Greenberg definitely added depth to my understanding of art criticism. It taught me how to take the right approach to critiquing work. The second video, however, did not add depth to my understanding. I did learn a lot of information about the Italian Renaissance, like it was the earliest manifestation of the general European Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement that began in Italy during the 14th century and lasted until the 16th century, marking the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe.

Project 4 Reflection

This first thing I did to start my exhibit was learn what it meant to be an art curator. So to learn this I watched Art Curator, Interview: Josh Yiu Assistant Curator of Chinese Art, Interview Wayne Baerwaldt curator Montreal Biennale, Felicity Fenner, curator at the Venice biennale and Peter Alter, Curator. After finishing these videos, it was time for me to pick a theme. This was harder than I expected. Obviously there are plenty of themes you could do, but most of them have been done over and over again. I wanted to pick a specific theme so it wouldn't be too broad. I figured nature would be a popular theme so I took that and chose something more specific to that theme. I came up with trees. Once I chose this theme it was time to find some pieces to go along with it. At first I had a really hard time. Then I realized I was going about searching for them the wrong way. So I picked an artist that I liked and limited my search to the artist name and tree. After doing this, I came up with more than enough options. The hard part became choosing the best options! Once I had all my pictures in place it was time to design the slides to correlate with the paintings. I had to think about the background, fonts and colors. I did not want anything that would take away from the beauty of the trees. This project was pretty interesting because you learn how much goes into these exhibits at museums and galleries. Its not just putting up art, its creating an atmosphere and an experience.

Module 13 and 14 videos

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art

1. discuss the key concepts you learned.
Some concepts I learned was what lowbrow means. It is art that no one knows how to characterize. Artist don't like using this term. I also learned that this type of style is made for the people and made to relate to the people. It uses car culture, pop culture and even historic references.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
It relates to the project for me in one way. It shows me that an exhibit does not need to be the normal paintings or sculptures, it can be provocative and they can be pretty much anything you want.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
This film was interesting. I have never heard of "Lowbrow" art until watching this. I don't really think it added much depth to my project.

Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach

1. discuss the key concepts you learned.
Some key concepts I learned was the intellectual and aesthetic issues associated with the display of art, using rooms in the Tate Modern as an example. Over viewing the exhibition style Alfred Barr established during his transformation of Museum of Modern Art in the 1930s, the video shows how Tate curators developed a new method utilizing theme-based museum sections.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
Yes this relates to the project because it shows how important the background and surroundings of your exhibit are. You do not want to pick anything that will overshadow the artwork and you want to make sure it coincides with the work.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
I thought this film was very informative. It really helped me think about how I will display my exhibit on the PowerPoint. That is pretty much the only thing I learned from this video.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology

1. Discuss the key concepts you learned.
This video talks about the remains of more than 10,000 Native Americans unearthed at archaeological sites across the U.S. are in the possession of museums such as the Smithsonian. This video discusses the tensions between scientists, historians, and museum curators and Native American groups, as the bones take on a central role in a war of alternate perspectives.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I do not think this video relates to my exhibition project. This video was pretty much all about how the Native Americans interpreted art throughout history, which has nothing to do with my project. The smallest connection I made was how art can keep a history of someone or something living forever.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
While I thought this film was very informative on the Native Americans history in art, I do not think it added any depth to the art concepts that we have learned.

An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan

1. discuss the key concepts you learned.
Some key concepts I learned is that a museum is never done and they do not just fill gaps they cannot represent a style, artist, or movement unless they can get an outstanding example. Mr. de Montebello has acquired more than 84,000 works of art and is the longest tenured director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I think this video definitely relates to my exhibition project. They discuss how curators find the best representative piece of the style or movement they are showing. It shows how much work goes into every detail of the museum, from frames to wall colors to lighting and even the other pieces surrounding each other.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
This film was very interesting and informative. It really helped me understand how important the surroundings of the art work is. Each piece has to work together and you should never settle for a piece that "kind of" fits the theme or movement you are exhibiting. You want to have the best.

Module 12 Videos

Andy Warhol: Images of an Image
The Art of Henry Moore

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
Andy Warhol video: I've always been interested in Andy Warhol because of his Campbell Soup painting. He is very different and I want to learn more about him.
Henry Moore video: I am not really sure why I chose this video. I guess I just wanted to learn more about him.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Andy Warhol video- the video talks about the Pop Art movement and life of Andy Warhol. He began by photographing his friends and then later filmed them. Then he added paint to his silk screening. Also, the many different faces of Liz Taylor was interesting to me how they all seemed to be different, but they all have her face to preserve the identity of Liz.

Henry Moore video- this video talked about the works of Henry Moore. It showed the sculptures of wounded warriors that he had done from a pebble he had found. He said "One must try to find a synthesis, to come to terms with opposite qualities".

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos really didn't relate to the text besides the fact that they discussed artwork from the time period post WWII and how the artists were changed by it.

 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I learned more about these two artists and they were very helpful in providing examples of their artwork. The videos put more images in my mind regarding the text. I am more of a visual learner so watching the videos usually helps what I read in the text sink in.

Art Gallery Trip Take 2

Burchfield Penney Art Center

The Exhibition

1. What is the title of the exhibit? Charles E. Burchfield: By Design
2. What is the theme of the exhibition? Transition of Burchfield from a designer to artist

The Gallery

Questions about the physical space:
1. What type of lighting is used? Bright lighting on the ceiling that is throughout the museum
2. What colors are used on the walls? Bright White
3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space? Just walls
4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space? It flows from one picture to the next

The Artwork

Questions about the artwork:
1. How are the artworks organized? By exhibit and artist
2. How are the artworks similar? Most of them have a camouflage feel to them because he actually designed some camo. for the army during World War I
3. How are the artworks different? They each use several different colors and patterns
4. How are the artworks framed? Most of the work is framed.
5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?
6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? They are all located in the same area so you can go from one picture to the next.

Milkweed, 1929
gouache with charcoal on paper,19 3/4 x 15 inches
This drawing reminds me of a Hawaiian shirt. The scattered milkweed and stems creates a crazy kind of pattern and with all the milkweeds intertwining, it creates a camouflage feel. There is blue space between the milkweed plants that make them stand out. The lines of the stems make your eyes wander throughout the drawing. He was dancing between designer and artist while making these pieces.

Nightfall, undated
 gouache on paper, 20 x 15 inches
This was my favorite piece out of the exhibition. It has a dark eerie feeling to it. The black bunched up leaves in the foreground creates a dark feeling to the piece. The background is brighter which makes the the leaves look like shadows.

Field Corn with Morning Glories, 1927
watercolor on paper, 26 x 27 1/2 inches
I see a wilting cornfield in this painting. Again I can see him trying to incorporate the camouflage feel to this piece. There is continuous lines through out the the corn stalks and they are bunched together making the piece feel chaotic.

What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?
I like visiting art galleries, this is the first time I have been to Burchfield Penney. The architecture of the inside of the inside of the building was quite plain and that is because they want the art work to stand out. The lights and surrounding areas really affect how a person can view the art work. Everything plays a role in how the art work is viewed.

Module 11 Videos

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose to watch the videos "Matisse and Picasso" and "Expressionism". I chose to watch the video about Matisse and Picasso because I have always been interested in their work and wanted to learn more about them. I chose the expressionism because the book gave a little information about it but I wanted to learn more.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Expressionism- I learned that during this movement, artist wanted to convey different emotions in their work, not just recreating the picture or person in front of them. They wanted to tell a story with their work by using color and facial expressions to show emotion.
Matisse and Picasso- I learned that Matisse and Picasso were in a way always competing against each other, however they always respected each other. Picasso knew of his talent since a young age and his father tried to help him pursue his talents. Matisse on the other hand did not even recognize his talent until he was at least 20.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
These videos relate to the text because it kind of explained expressionism a little more and gave a lot more examples of artwork from the movement. It was interesting to learn more about Matisse and Picasso and their strange relationship.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I was not a fan of the expressionism film. I thought it would be more about expressionist movement and less about the couple of artists. I really liked the Matisse and Picasso film. I thought it was interesting how they competed and how they had a mutual respect for each other. They even gave each other a painting. I think the videos helped show the different movements more in detail by giving several works.

Module 10 Masks

1. Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.
I chose these three pieces because each of them had an interesting pattern or feature on them. I liked the elephants and the shape of the first mask, the second mask had some interesting patterns around the eyes and the third mask had great colors and patterns.

2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces.
These masks all have intricate detail. They all contain specific patterns and the lines make your eyes follow around the whole mask. The first two masks are dark and use only black and gold colors. The last mask uses red, black and gold.

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.
I used different patterns throughout the mask. I also used a texture paper (although you cant really tell in the picture.) I used red and black with a gold background.
5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.
I liked my finished mask. I think it would be really great if I had the time to actually make a paper mache mask. Creating the mask was fun. It made me feel like I could be creative.

Module 10 videos

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the videos Buddhism and African Art. I selected the two videos because I wanted a further look into the cultures and art than what the book offered us.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the first video, I learned about the cultures and art sculptures of Buddhism. I learned that the scriptures were written in stone for the people who could not read and got a more in depth knowledge of Buddhism. In the second video, I learned how African art was made and learned about mosaic making and materials that are used.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings in the text because the book gave us a quick overview of each culture. The videos went into further detail and showed more examples of the art. The videos did a better job of explaining because they had a lot of images to follow along with the information.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Overall I thought both videos did a great job of explaining both cultures and added a bit more to what the book talked about. I liked how the videos explained the art forms of each civilizations.

Module 9 Videos

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose to watch  “The Drawings of Michelangelo” and “Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance” because I am interested in learning more about Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci's work has always fascinated me.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
While watching "The Drawings of Michelangelo" some of the key concepts I learned was the different types of tools he used, the techniques he used, and just the different pieces he created like the Sistine Chapel and David. For the second movie "Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance" the main concept I learned was pretty much how he lived his life. His mind and how he viewed and created things was amazing. He was definitely an innovator.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
These videos related to the text because they explained more about the Renaissance Era. It also showed and explained more of the different techniques artists used. It brought everything I read in the book to life and helped it explain things more in depth.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The films were very information on the artists work and their life. The video on Leonardo was more focused on his life rather than his work but it was still pretty interesting. Like I said above, watching films on what you had just read usually brings the text to life and really helps you understand.

Module 9- Hands

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
It was kind of hard using my own hand as the subject. For one thing, I kept moving it and I usually use both hands when I draw, one to actually draw and the other to hold on the paper.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I used pencil. The only reason I did was because it was the only source I had at my house, plus I am more comfortable using pencil.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
It was really hard! My hand was extremely shaky and I couldn't draw a straight line for the life of me. I couldn't get much detail in with my non-dominant hand because of that. It felt so unnatural using my left hand to draw.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
My right hand drawing of the left hand was definitely better in comparison. There is more detail and it looks more like my hand. The left hand drawing of my right hand is basic and is not really to scale.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
No way. The whole time drawing it just felt uncomfortable and I kept wanting to switch. I hated that I couldn't get the detail I wanted and that my hand wouldn't move to where I wanted it to go!

Module 8

More Human Than Human

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.
Well this is the video we had to watch, so I did not select this video

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
What I learned from this film is how the human mind chooses to view the images like it does and whether or not it likes that image. The image we create through art is not realistic because we enhance parts of the body that we are most interested in or how we think it should be. That is why early art made people look young with no wrinkles and fit. It wasn't until the Romans that we started creating humans in their actual likeness.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
In the text I read about how the Romans changed art by creating human sculptures to their actual likeness. This video gave me a better understanding of that.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
Its always nice to watch a video that relates to information you read about. For me, it helps really explain things by showing what they mean and giving more details.

Cairo Museum

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose this video because I have always been extremely interested in Egypt and their history. In fact, visiting Egypt is on my bucket list. Which stinks and is so sad because I will probably never be able to because of all the unrest there. I hope they leave the historical museums and artifacts alone.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
This video was all about Egyptian art and how most of their art represented eternal life as well as death. The main reason Egyptians mummified their dead was because they believed that when someone died, their soul left their body. The soul would then return and be reunited with the body after it was buried. However, the soul needed to be able to find and recognize the body in order to have eternal life. They also said how most of the artifacts have been preserved and are in museums for the public to see. However, there are still many artifacts that are not on display.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
I don't think it really related to the text besides how the Egyptians put their beliefs into their artwork. It wasn't necessarily religion like the text describes.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I enjoyed this film because, again, I have always been interested in Egyptian history and artifacts. Like I said above, watching a film after reading usually gives more detail and helps you understand better.

Module 7- videos

Prairie Style
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Frank Lloyd Wright revolutionized the way houses were made. He came up with the "prairie style" home. He got away from the standard boxy house and created a natural, flowing and open floor plan. He rethought the way houses were organized, meaning the places the certain rooms were located.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
I think Frank Lloyd Wright kind of went away from what was written in the text. I feel like the text was kind of the basics of architecture. He revolutionized architecture. The only thing I could link to the text was the post and lintels which is just the standard framing.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
I like this video because I learned more about how Frank Lloyd Wright really came up with his buildings. He put so much thought into each room. He wanted the whole house to flow into each other. It shows how many different styles can be used architecture.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
I chose Prairie Style because it is about Frank Lloyd Wright. Since we have some of his creations around here, I wanted to learn more about him.

Last Call for Planet Earth:
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
There is so much we can do to help the environment even though people do not believe it. There are many different ways we can make energy that we are not using. We could be cutting our energy use by 20-30% by using these sustainable energy sources.  One way a building can save a lot of energy is the window placement. If you place windows on the correct side lots of natural light can come in and putting smaller well insulated windows on the north side can help save energy.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video kind of stated everything that was in the text relating to the "green movement". It listed and talked about all the different ways we can save energy, reuse products and using more sustainable natural resources.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
This film was good, however, with people speaking different languages it was harder to follow. I had to replay some parts a few times so I could really grasp what they were saying.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
I chose this film because I am interested in the "green movement" we have started. There are so many sustainable ways to help the environment. I hate when I am out and I see new office buildings or homes being built when there are so many vacant ones around collecting dust.

Module 6 Reviewing Peer Work

1. Hyperlink the Blogs you reviewed into your Blog

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

For the most part I totally saw the elements/principles that they were trying to convey. There were a couple that I had to look for the title before I recognized it. I definitely saw other elements and principles in some of the images, but I feel like in most pieces of art you will always find a few!

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

Yes. We both used Afro Concertino, 1948. We had pretty much the same experience while looking at this piece. We pretty much couldn't look away and kept noticing more details the longer we looked at it.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

Yes actually, the same blog from the question above. I really like the piece he chose Koolpop #12. It reminded me of a giant jolly rancher! Its cool how whatever is behind it comes through all squiggly. I wonder if the artist was trying to do that.

5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

I do find it valuable if the person posting is really interested in the work and the class. If they aren't they will just post some generic message to show that they did the assignment. So while I do find it valuable, it really just depends on your peer and how much they care.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

While writing this, no one had commented on my blog. I will have to check back at a later time to read what they wrote. I'm sure I will find it helpful!

Module 6

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In the first video, it shows the details of the whole process of making a sculpture. It starts with the artists sketch and the very long and complicated process of selecting the stone. The stone selection is very dangerous for the workers. I think the most important thing I learned was how much thought and work each little step takes for creating a sculpture and most of that work happens before you even start sculpting! The second video showed me how much ceramics are used in everyday life. From false teeth to hip replacements and even helping with pollution.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The readings in the text just gave a step by step on how arts like modeling and carving are done in detail. The videos showed how the processes are done. To me, its more interesting to watch something be created than to just read about it.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

These films were pretty interesting to watch. After reading about the processes of making these different types of art it was pretty cool to actually watch it being done. Like I said above, I learn better by seeing how things are done. Reading about them is one thing, but watching it is much more exciting. It shows the great lengths the artists go to create their pieces.

Albright-Knox Visit

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?

CHRISTMAS CARD, 1977

This piece left an impact on me because I just don't understand why this is hanging in an art museum. There are so many amazing pieces out there that are real works of art that are being sold on the streets. How is this art?

NUDES, 1951
mixed media on paper

This piece left an impression on me because it reminded me of cave drawings. The way it is blended and kind of primitive really jumped out at me.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

AFRO
CONCERTINO, 1948
oil and watercolor on canvas

La Maison De La Crau (1888)I chose this piece because I was drawn to it. I was drawn to it because I thought it was a Picasso piece. I looked at this piece for awhile, I love all the different shapes and how everything is intertwined together. You can't tell where one line starts and another stops.

LA MAISON DE LA CRAU (THE OLD MILL), 1888
Oil on canvas

The reason I chose Vincent Van Gogh's piece was because I love his work. I had no idea we had one of his pieces here in Buffalo. This piece makes me want to live in this house because of the bright cheerful colors.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

Acceleration #15, Series B, 1962
vinyl cords and painted wood

I chose this piece to learn more about because it is so hypnotizing. I want to learn how the artist made this look like its dancing. Almost like the fuzz on tv. Apparently the artist did this piece but putting it down in layers.

WOMAN CLEANING A CAULDRON (FEMME NETTOYANT SON CHAUDRON), 1883-1885

I chose this piece to learn more about because comparing it to the other Van Gogh piece, this is really drab for his style. I really want to learn why he didn't use his typical bright colors or even paint for that matter. When looking into this, it said he used charcoal other than that I couldn't really find much information about this piece.

Logo Design

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
Creating my logo was pretty cool. It made me think about what was most important to me and what really defines me. Obviously as you can see, I am from New Orleans and I have deep pride in my roots.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
While thinking about making this logo, I first thought was was most important to me and what defines me. Once I realized it was my New Orleans roots, I thought about different symbols that define New Orleans. Mardi Gras beads, fleur de lis and the most basic, Louisiana state. Then I just added my initials.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
How much one little logo can mean. This one little logo is the symbol of who I am and I had to make it memorable by adding the bright yellow.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important thing I learned was that a simple logo that gets straight to the point really is the best type of logo you can have. When it is too complicated it won't be as memorable and with advertising that is important.

Module 4....Exploring Value and The Subtractive Color Theory

Value Scale

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
Well it would have been okay, but I had a really hard time finding cyan paint. Once I found all the correct colors, it was pretty easy to do. I did a couple of them because I couldn't quite get some of the colors right the first time. The green and red still aren't perfect but it was the closest out of all the attempts. The value scale was a little harder because of the lighter boxes.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I liked using the acrylic paint more because I am used to using paints. I have been mixing colors my whole school career so I am comfortable doing it.
3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
Learning how to color in the boxes as lightly as possible. It really showed me the different values a pencil can make. Obviously, the primary colors are important because it is the foundation of all paintings.
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
I think the most important information I learned from the first video was that the color wheel is a a pretty clear cut way of explaining the primary and secondary colors. I had to watch this first video a few times. The second video was interesting but explained simple things that most people already know. The second video did not really teach me much. It kind of just gave me an example of what I had to make.

Elements and Principles Slideshow

http://s1348.photobucket.com/user/whitehurstg/slideshow/Elements%20and%20Principles

This photos were harder to take than I thought they would be. However, I thought I did a pretty good job finding all the different elements and principles of art. Photobucket was a great site, despite a couple of crash's. I like how you can edit your photos to really emphasize the color and feeling you are trying for. They had a lot of different options to choose from. This project was pretty cool to do. I feel like it tells the story of what I did this past week. From swimming, to running a 5k, to just passing a cool plant. I got to tell my story. I had a little trouble with some of the principles but in the end I think they all came out pretty well.

Module 3... Color and Emotion

1. Describe Color and its effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color is the most powerful tool an artist can have. There are many of different hues, values and intensities in color that make up all the emotion of the piece. Color is what reaches out and grabs a hold of the observer. There have been many studies on how colors can affect your mood. Which is why color is a key aspect in advertising. Designers use color to draw the person in to look at their product. The best example of psychological and physiological responses of color would be a stop sign. The red of the stop sign shouts caution! If that stop sign was painted a blue or green, would it have the same effect on us? Would we even notice it? Although red is usually used as a caution or danger color, it is also used for love. Which shows the differences of the emotions that a color can convey.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

I was most fascinated with just the basic principles of color. Color comes from the reflection of light on a surface. The darker the surface, the more it will absorb the light, while lighter objects reflect the light that hits them. Think of a rainbow. The white sunlight reflects off all the tiny rain droplets and creates one specific color of the spectrum. It’s amazing to me that white, a bland boring color, can produce these intense and beautiful colors.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?

The biggest impact the video had on me was how different values and hues of a color can portray a totally different emotion in the piece. The fact that June Redfern did so much research and had so many failed attempts at finding the right color for this emotion of her piece really intrigued me. She wanted to portray how the location felt when she was there. Even the subtle changes she made really made a difference on how the painting felt to me.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?

It’s funny, until now I never really noticed how much I overlook the darker pieces of art. I tend to focus on the bright and captivating pieces. I would rather look at art that makes me feel happy and joyous, not the aggressive or morbid pieces that depress me. This video really made me realize the type of art I enjoy. I think Goya’s paintings are disturbing and strange. This video also reminds of Picasso's Blue period. Where he only used various hues or blues and greens during a period of time when he was very sad and depressed.

Module 2..blog

Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts

This video, although long was interesting.  It followed different philosophers and their view on art and how it is important and necessary in the world. It was cool, it gave us difference in opinions of each philosopher in how art is beautiful.

CARTA:

Wow, I could barely understand the first guy.  The two scientist basically explained how our brain perceives art.  The second scientist, if you will, had these 8 concepts or rules of art that allow artists to stimulate our brain.

CNN:

The CNN article touched on what both movies did.  Pretty much repeated.  It goes into description how we see art.  Such as lines, faces, and colors.  It also brings up the Mona Lisa painting.  Which if looked at, at different angles it appears as if her smile is also moving.  Artist use deception in there art to fool the viewer sometimes.

The video and articles all intertwined together.  They all talked about aesthetics.

As for the films.  They were hard to watch.  I could not even understand the first guy. And it was really long and what I fear...power points.  It is cool how our brain works when we view art though.

The creation of my first Blog

Creating a Gmail account was very simple. Just another username and password I have to remember. Oh well.  The blog was confusing for a couple of minutes because I did not completely read all of the instructions. So shame on me for that. But I figured it out and everyone is happy.

I expect to learn a lot about art in this course.  I am not a big fan of art, but I do know art is everywhere.  Hopefully this class will open up my closed-minded vision of art.

I have taken online courses before, so I am familiar with them.  The one thing I have learned is that online courses are a lot tougher than in class courses. So bring it.
